There are many titles we could have given this web log. We considered Bad's Blog. "Bad" references the Lopez family's nickname for Karl (not sure, but I think this may have been given to him in jest). That blog name was apparently already taken. We considered "Git 'er done," and "Don't Worry, Be Happy." We knew it had to be either a positive or neutral statement. Then one evening our neighbor came over. Karl shared with him the latest hospital findings. His response: "Well that ain't no hill for a climber." Immediately I looked at Karl and said, "That's the name of your blog." He agreed. We like the colloquial feel and the positive slant.
So here's a little history...the short version:
November: Karl exhibits all the signs of having a thyroid problem...bloating, hair loss, etc., and back ache.
December: Mom is diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully it is a very small tumor. She chooses to have a lumpectomy and it is scheduled for January.
Late December: Karl goes to his family doctor who checks his blood and finds his thyroid is WAY out of whack. He thinks the back ache and many other symptoms will go away when the thyroid medication is regulated.
January: Mom undergoes a lumpectomy. All margins are clean. Radiation is scheduled to decrease the chance of recurrence to 5 percent. Arimadex is prescribed to further reduce the chance to 1 percent of recurrence. We are blessed!!
January/February: Many of Karl's symptom's subside and even improve...except for the back pain. The doctor thinks it is a pinched sciatic nerve and prescribes two weeks of physical therapy.
March 10: Mom begins 7 weeks of radiation, (5 days a week) at St. Joe's in Ann Arbor.
March 19: Karl undergoes an MRI at Bixby. We get the shocking news that there is a tumor on his sacrum (the bone above his tailbone) and the nerves that surround it.
March 21: We are blessed to get an appointment with a surgeon and staff at the University of Michigan who immediately schedule a battery of tests and prescribe better pain-controlling drugs.
March 31: Karl is scheduled to see a medical oncologist, Dr. Scott Schuetze, at U-M.
April 2: Karl, Mom, Randy and I meet with Dr. Schuetze and Dr. Biermann (orthopaedic oncologist and surgeon). We are told Karl has a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor which is in the sarcoma family of cancers...which is curable. He will need chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and then a very intricate and risky surgery to remove the tumor.

April 3: Darby, Mom's dog (Karl's dog previous to that), swallows a piece of barbed wire and it perforates his stomach. Due to age and a ton of other contributing factors, he had to be put to sleep. (Okay, this stuff runs in threes, right? Only good news from now on!!!)
April 9: Karl has a stress test and a PET scan.
April 14: Karl receives a chest port. Good news! Cancer has not metasticized.
April 15, 16, 17, 18 & 19: Chemotherapy.
May 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9: Chemotherapy.
There have definitely been hills so far and there will be more, but overall, with God's grace and your prayers, "it ain't no hill for a climber."

Karl, Kerry, Randy and Susie. My prayers are with you all. Susie - for a full recovery, which I know you will have (it is a must or Lois would be lost) Karl - also for a full recovery. You've beat it before and can do it again. You are blessed to have a family that is known for its strength and sense of humor. Laughter really is the best medicine. Kerry - to stay strong, as I know you have a lot on your shoulders right now. Randy - to help keep Kerry strong (we all know she is tough as nails) to deal with all the challenges you all now face. I miss you all. Great blog. Nice way to keep everyone informed. I miss you all.

Karl - We're your long lost relatives in Las Vegas! I don't believe I've actually seen you since, well, you might have been a toddler! Shameful. The blog is great (my daughter also has a blog here - now I will check two!). We are all praying for you and your mom (who I know as Joann!), for a full recovery for both. Aunt Fran Gaertner, Cousin Pam Terry & family (Aunt Fran can't quite figure this out yet, but I'll make sure she gets on!)
Karl,
"NO HILL FOR CLIMBER" It reminds me of a hill we climbed at Cedar Point on a Roller Coaster, remember? You were maybe 10. I can still see your little face. Just as you tackled that hill, so will you tackle this one. I will pray for you without ceasing. And if you need some inflateables, let me know. Love you bunches, Marcy
What a great idea. You know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Uncle Tom has been going over his hat collection to see just the right one for you Karl and we will see that you get it.
When you get to the top of this hill I am sure that you will be cured --happy & healthy with a whole lot of hats.
love & blessings, Aunt Betty(Uncle Tom too)

Hey Karl,
Talked to Jeff and he filled us in on what was happening.
Hang in there buddy. You are in our prayers.
Mark, Kellie and Abbey.
Karl,..you "might" remember me from many years ago,,..but I was Kirk's roommate at Ferris! My sister told me about this blog and your current situation, but fear not good buddy,....I've been shaving my head for 3 years now and Uncle Fester was a trend setter before it was even cool!! I have every reason to believe you will WIN this battle and with the support of your family and friends...and God's healing hands,..you'll be up and running around in no time! Don't let my sister give you any chit, and if she does,..put a tack on her seat at Muck's...infact..you might want to make it a nail...a tack might not be long enough! LOL!! Keep the faith my little Bruthafromanutha Motha!! Attitude is EVERYTHING when fighting cancer and you've got what it takes!! I'll pop back in soon to check on your progress....and the next time I'm in Tecumseh, I'll drop off a Bass Pro Shops hat for you...no real man should EVER be without one!! Keep climbing and tell Kirk to drop me a line sometime...he lives 10-15 minutes from my brother in PA!! I'm going out there in Oct to bow hunt, so maybe we can hook-up...I haven't seen Kirk in 20 years!! Keep the faith and stay strong....you WILL WIN!!
Regards,
Bill McElroy
